A 4-year-old child learned from an animated cartoon to use an umbrella as a parachute and jumped off the 26th floor, luckily survived.According to Weifang Evening News, on May 26th, a 4-and-a-half-year-old child in Jishou City, Hunan Province imitated a scene from an animated cartoon, using an umbrella as a parachute and jumped from the 26th floor. The parents were not home at the time and the child was playing alone at home. The balcony did not have protective netting. The child wanted to go out and play with friends but couldn't get out, so he imitated the scene from the cartoon and jumped off the balcony while holding up an umbrella. Fortunately, due to the child's light weight, the cushioning of the umbrella, and a tree that broke the fall, he survived with several fractures in various parts of his body except for his right hand but without any life-threatening injuries.
Installing anti-theft nets in high-rise residential buildings is a consensus.Young children have no concept of death. In families with children, in order to prevent high fall accidents, it is common to install anti-theft nets. In China, most new families live in high-rise elevator apartments. Families with children and floor heights exceeding three floors rarely do not install anti-theft nets. This is different from the practice in Europe and America, where anti-theft nets are installed in low-rise buildings but not in high-rise buildings.
This family installed anti-theft nets on all the windows of their house, but for some reason, they did not install one on the balcony, which led to the child jumping from the 26th floor. When the parents were not at home, the child saw friends playing downstairs, and remembered the scene from an animation where an umbrella was used as a parachute. So, the child opened the umbrella and jumped off the balcony.
Fortunately, the child was still small and not very heavy, and the quality of the umbrella was also good. It played a certain buffering role. When the child was approaching the ground, a big tree blocked its fall, and timely rescue efforts ultimately saved the child's life. However, apart from the right hand, all limbs were broken. Although the child survived, he/she would need long-term treatment and recovery. This is a great lesson for this family.
The number of cases where children are injured or killed due to imitating scenes from cartoons is not small.Around the world, there have been many cases of children being injured or killed while imitating scenes from cartoons. In China, there is a strict screening mechanism for the cartoons shown to children to try to avoid such incidents. However, it may be difficult to completely prevent dangerous actions from occurring in cartoons due to plot requirements.
Nowadays, more and more children watch cartoons through short video platforms. On these platforms, if a real video involves risky behavior, a text prompt generally appears to warn viewers that the action carries risks and should not be imitated.
In my opinion, this type of warning could be implemented within cartoons as well. If an exaggerated scene in a cartoon has the potential to lead to safety accidents when imitated by children, a warning message could appear. For cartoons targeted at young children who do not yet know how to read (ages 3-7), animated warnings could be displayed to caution them against imitating such behavior.
Parents should increase safety awareness.Another important reason for this incident was that the parents left their child alone at home. I know that, for various reasons such as work and daily life, many parents leave their children under the age of six alone at home. However, such practices come with risks. Some children may seem well-behaved, but their imagination knows no bounds, and they may do extraordinary things without realizing it.
Apart from falling from high places, leaving a child alone at home can also lead to other risks such as drowning, electric shock, choking, and accidental injury. Taking good care of one's own children is the path to a happy family. I hope that every child can grow up healthy and happy.
